A prison officer working at Welikada Prison was arrested by prison officials yesterday (14) afternoon for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison and was handed over to the Borella Police.
The officer was arrested during a sudden search conducted near the main entrance of the prison following a tip-off received by prison authorities.
During the search, officials discovered 96 grams of ice and 16.7 grams of heroin carefully concealed inside the shoes worn by the suspect.
Following notification of the incident, a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Division, led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Borella Police Station, immediately commenced investigations.
The suspect and the seized drugs have been taken into police custody for further legal proceedings. The Borella Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
