Turkish Airlines has agreed to compensate world javelin champion Rumesha Tharanga for damage caused to his sporting equipment.
Rumesha Tharanga, who won the gold medal in the javelin throw at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Hungary, reportedly found five of his javelins damaged when he arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport.
A meeting was held last Tuesday at the Civil Aviation Authority premises under the leadership of Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janith Ruwan Kodithuwakku to discuss the matter. Officials from Sri Lanka and representatives of Turkish Airlines attended the meeting.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, representatives of Turkish Airlines expressed their regret over the damage caused to Tharanga’s sporting equipment.
It was agreed that the airline would conduct the necessary internal investigations to assess the extent of the damage. Turkish Airlines has also agreed to take urgent steps to provide compensation to Rumesha Tharanga for the damage caused.
