An appeal has been filed before the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court against an order of the Colombo District Court refusing a request to direct Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a blood sample for a DNA test in connection with a paternity case.
The Colombo District Court had previously rejected the request, ruling that sufficient and reasonable grounds had not been presented to justify conducting a DNA test.
The case was filed by flight attendant Rasika Sewwandi, who is seeking a court declaration that Chamika Karunaratne is the father of her child.
In her petition, she has requested the court to declare Karunaratne as the child's father and direct the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming him as the father.
She alleges that she had been in a relationship with Karunaratne since around 2023 and that he refused to acknowledge paternity after she became pregnant.
However, Karunaratne has consistently denied the allegations and has also expressed opposition to undergoing a DNA test.
