A shortage of essential surgical supplies, including crepe bandages, has been reported at several major hospitals in Sri Lanka, including the Colombo National Hospital, according to Government Medical Officers’ Forum Chairman Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa.
He said patients are facing difficulties due to shortages of bandages required for wound dressing, covering wounds after surgery and treating orthopaedic conditions.
According to Dr. Sanjeewa, delays in the procurement process of the Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry of Health have contributed to the shortage. He also pointed out that provisions allowing hospital directors to locally purchase essential supplies from approved pharmacies are not being properly implemented at some hospitals.
As a result, patients are being required to purchase essential medical supplies from outside pharmacies. He said this has placed an additional burden on patients and families, particularly those who have no one to purchase the required items for them.
Dr. Sanjeewa also said the procurement process for the health sector for 2027 has stalled. He warned that if the delays continue, shortages of medicines and medical equipment similar to those experienced in previous years could emerge again.
He has called on the Health Minister to intervene immediately and address weaknesses in the procurement and distribution system.
