Police have warned that strict legal action will be taken against passengers who travel on expressways without wearing seat belts, in violation of road safety regulations.
Deputy Inspector General of Police W. P. J. Seneviratne, who is in charge of the Police Traffic Control and Road Safety Division, said that the number of passengers travelling in vehicles on expressways must correspond to the number of seat belts available in the vehicle.
He further explained that if a vehicle has only two seat belts on the rear seat, only two passengers are permitted to travel on that seat.
The Deputy Inspector General emphasized that if a third passenger travels on the rear seat when there is no middle seat belt, legal action will be taken against that passenger.
