New York City has moved to ban the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by students in public schools up to Grade 8.
The decision was taken amid concerns that the use of AI could affect children's individual abilities, independent thinking skills and mental well-being.
The ban is expected to come into effect from next week.
However, students above Grade 9 will be permitted to use AI applications for certain specified purposes.
Meanwhile, some flexibility has been granted to teachers in the use of AI tools for professional tasks such as preparing lessons.
The New York education authorities have also recommended limiting classroom screen time to 45 minutes for students from Grades 6 to 8 and to 30 minutes for primary school students.
In a statement, it was stressed that direct interaction with teachers is essential for children to learn and develop.
Children should have opportunities to build skills alongside their peers, develop relationships with teachers, and independently face and solve difficult problems, the statement noted.
While the technology sector may view AI-based early education as inevitable and necessary, the city administration does not share that view, according to the statement.
