The Supreme Court has determined that a referendum is not required to pass the 22nd Amendment Bill to the Constitution.
According to the Supreme Court’s determination, the Bill can be passed in Parliament with a special two-thirds majority.
The petition ruling containing the Supreme Court’s determination had been referred to the Speaker. Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne formally presented the ruling to Parliament at the commencement of today’s (22) parliamentary sitting.
