The Colombo Chief Magistrate has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately investigate whether a statement made by politician Wimal Weerawansa criticising the remanding of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa amounted to contempt of court.
The order was issued after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) requested the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to examine the matter.
The request was made when the case filed against Namal Rajapaksa over the alleged Airbus bribery transaction was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (18).
No final determination has been made by the court at this stage as to whether Weerawansa’s statement constitutes contempt of court.
