Opatha Vithanage Prasanna Sanjeewa, former Chairman of the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority, was arrested today (15) by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
According to CIABOC, the arrest followed an investigation into an alleged corruption offence committed during his tenure.
Investigators allege that Sanjeewa exceeded his authority and issued passenger transport permits while bypassing the prescribed tender procedure, in violation of the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority statute.
The irregular procedure allegedly provided an unlawful benefit to external parties and caused a financial loss of Rs. 4,160,000 to the government, according to CIABOC.
The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, reports said.
